Autumn Lights - Making the most of the season (2026)

Autumn Lights — Making the Most of the Season

Omorfia Interior Design Journal · August 2026

After what has been a gloriously long and hot summer (one of the warmest on record for the UK), there's something almost bittersweet about the shift into autumn. The evenings are drawing in, the light is changing, and the urge to nest, to cosy up and to make our homes feel warm and inviting is already making itself felt.

The good news is that autumn is one of the most beautiful seasons for interiors. And with a few thoughtful changes - many of them simpler than you might think - you can make your home feel every bit as wonderful as those long summer evenings felt outside.

Start with Colour

This autumn, the colours dominating homeware collections and paint charts feel almost tailor-made for the season. The palette is warm, rich and deeply inviting; earthy ochres, caramel, rust and terracotta sit alongside deep forest greens, burgundy and plum. Little Greene's colour of the year, Adventurer (a gorgeous plum aubergine) and the season's love affair with deep, lacquered burgundy make a compelling case for being bold with colour as we head into the darker months.

You don't need to repaint an entire room to feel the benefit. A deep burgundy or forest green on a single chimney breast, an alcove, or even on the inside of a bookcase can transform the feel of a space instantly. If you'd rather keep your walls neutral, the same effect can be achieved through accessories - cushions, throws, lampshades and ceramics in the season's richer tones are widely available on the high street right now and make an immediate impact for relatively little investment.

The broader trend this autumn is towards warmth and feeling grounded; colours that feel settled and enveloping rather than stark or cool. After a summer of brightness, there's something deeply appealing about coming home to a room that wraps itself around you.

Layer Your Lighting

Lighting is arguably the single most transformative element you can address as the seasons change, and yet it's the one most people overlook until they find themselves squinting under a harsh overhead light on a dark October evening.

A successful lighting scheme works in layers, and autumn is the perfect time to reassess yours. The three layers to think about are:

Ambient lighting: your overhead or general light source, which sets the overall brightness of the room.

Task lighting: floor lamps, desk lamps and reading lights that serve a specific practical purpose. These can be brighter and cooler in tone, particularly for reading, studying or working.

Decorative lighting: the finishing touches that add atmosphere and personality. Wall lights, table lamps, candles and accent lighting all fall into this category.

The magic happens when all three work together. Here's how to adjust your layers for autumn:

Swap lampshades - a shade in a warm amber, gold, rust or soft cream will cast a completely different quality of light than a white or grey one. The difference is immediate and striking, and a new shade is one of the most affordable ways to refresh a room.

Choose warmer bulbs - look for bulbs with a colour temperature of around 2700K for your ambient and decorative lighting. This gives a warm, golden glow rather than the cooler, bluer light that can feel harsh and unflattering in the evening.

Fit dimmer switches - if you haven't already, this is genuinely one of the best investments you can make for your home. The ability to adjust the light level to suit the mood - bright for cooking, dim for a film, low for winding down - makes an enormous difference to how a room feels to be in.

Create a reading corner - a comfortable chair, a good floor or table lamp, a generous throw and something absorbing to read. Simple, affordable and one of the great pleasures of the darker months.

The Smart Lighting Moment

Smart lighting has moved from luxury to mainstream — and autumn is a wonderful time to explore it. Bulbs and systems from brands such as Philips Hue, LIFX and Govee allow you to adjust the colour temperature and brightness of your lighting through an app or voice control, meaning you can shift from a bright, cool light for morning energy to a warm, amber glow for a cosy evening with a single tap. Some systems will even do this automatically, adjusting throughout the day to mirror the natural light cycle — which is particularly lovely as the days shorten.

LED strip lighting, used thoughtfully behind furniture, under kitchen units or along bookshelves, adds a beautiful warm accent layer that gives depth to a room without adding clutter. The technology has come a long way and the results, even on a modest budget, can be genuinely impressive.

The Season's Textures

Lighting works hand in hand with texture — and autumn is the season to layer up. Swap out your lighter summer cushions and throws for something more substantial: velvet, boucle, chunky knit, soft wool. These materials don't just feel warmer, they absorb light differently, creating a softness and depth that makes a room feel more intimate and inviting.

Rattan and natural wood tones complement this year's earthy palette beautifully, and candles — whether scented or unscented — add the softest and most flattering light of all.

A Final Thought

The shift into autumn doesn't have to feel like a loss. With the right colours, the right light and the right textures, your home can feel just as wonderful in October as it did on the best days of summer — just in a completely different way.
