Designing with a Conscience — What Sustainable Interior Design Really Means

When most people think about sustainable choices, they think about recycling, energy efficiency, or perhaps switching to an electric car. What fewer people realise is that the choices made during a home renovation or interior design project can have a significant environmental impact — and that working with a designer who understands this is one of the most powerful ways to make your home not just beautiful, but genuinely responsible.

At Omorfia, sustainability is woven into how we approach every project. In this post I want to share some of the thinking that goes into our material and product recommendations — because I believe that when clients understand the reasons behind our suggestions, they're far better placed to make choices they feel genuinely good about.

What made this project particularly meaningful — and particularly demanding — was understanding the client at its heart. He has ADHD and is significantly visually impaired, retaining only approximately fifteen percent of his sight. Any design decisions had to be made not just with aesthetics in mind, but with a genuine understanding of how he experiences and navigates his world.

This was not a project about just what looked good. It was a project about what worked, what felt safe, and what made a young person feel truly at home.

It's the room your guests use most and the one that gets the least attention. The downstairs cloakroom; that tiny, tucked-away space under the stairs or at the end of a hallway is so often an afterthought. A plain white suite, a generic mirror, a roller blind and nothing else. Functional, yes. Memorable? Not quite.

‍But…the cloakroom is actually one of the most exciting rooms in the house to design. Precisely because it's small, you can be bold in ways you might not dare to be elsewhere. It doesn't have to live up to the same everyday practicality as a kitchen or a bedroom. It just has to delight - and it absolutely can!

There's a common misconception that new build homes are easy to decorate. After all, everything is clean, fresh and blank — what's not to love? When I set up my Interior Designer business, I hadn’t anticipated the number of times I would be casually asked by friends and acquaintances ‘Ooh, what can I do with this room?’ (I imagine it’s a bit like doctors being asked at every party ‘What do you make of this mole/wart/rash then?!’)

Colour quandaries when decorating, whether it’s paint, tile, flooring, or furnishings, are probably the most common dilemmas that we all go through at some point – I am still scarred from the memory of painting my dining room three times in five days until I got the exact tone of blue that was in my head!

As we approach the end of our ‘blink and you’ve missed it’ summer, it’s easy to feel despondent at the thought of the long, dreary months ahead – especially with the amount of time most of us have spent at home in recent times.

I hate to bring up the dreaded spectre of Christmas whilst we are still trying to swan about in sandals and floaty summer clothes – but in terms of wanting to make interior design changes to your home before December, the time to start really is right now! The pandemic and ensuing rise in people making changes to their homes, coupled with multiple supply chain problems in the building and furniture industry has meant a huge increase in lead times, and also contractor availability.

It’s no surprise to me that a large proportion of my clients are owners (and sometimes tenants) of new build homes, and that their main requests for help are often the same; ‘it’s too bland’, ‘I want it to feel homely’, ‘there’s so much to do, I don’t know where to start’ etc. They also often feel that furniture from their previous home doesn’t work in the new setting, or just generally needs updating…but that’s a post for another day!
